Potolo — On-Demand Ride Platform
An on-demand transportation platform built in Flutter featuring integrated passenger ride-booking and real-time driver dispatch modes within a single cohesive mobile application.
Project Overview
Potolo is an on-demand ride-hailing mobile application engineered in Flutter and Dart, combining both Passenger and Driver experiences into a unified, high-performance architecture.
Passengers search destinations with geocoded autocomplete, view upfront tiered fares, book rides, and track driver approach in real-time. Through role-based authentication, drivers switch to dispatch mode to receive audible trip broadcasts, navigate turn-by-turn with Google Maps, manage active trip state machines, and track shift earnings.
My Engineering Role
Lead Flutter Mobile Engineer responsible for end-to-end architecture across both Passenger and Driver modes, background GPS telemetry, real-time WebSocket/Firebase synchronization, and Google Maps routing.
The Challenge
Coordinating synchronized state transitions across customer booking requests and driver dispatch queues while managing battery-efficient background GPS tracking and smooth vehicle marker interpolation on interactive maps.
The Solution
Architected a dual-mode Flutter Clean Architecture system with unified domain entities, WebSocket/Firebase real-time event pipeline, finite state machines for trip lifecycles (Booking -> Matching -> Arrived -> In-Trip -> Completed), and background geofencing.
High-Level Architecture
- Dual-mode Flutter mobile application sharing unified authentication, domain entities, and network layers.
- Real-time WebSocket and Firebase synchronization engine broadcasting trip updates with sub-second latency.
- Google Maps Platform integration with custom vehicle marker interpolation, polyline routes, and turn-by-turn navigation.
- Resilient location telemetry pipeline with GPS jitter filtering and battery-conscious background updates during driver shifts.
Key Features & Workflows
- Customer mode: Geocoded destination search, upfront tiered fare estimation, and live approaching driver map tracking
- Driver mode: Instant ride broadcast alerts with countdown accept/decline timers and turn-by-turn pickup navigation
- Interactive Google Maps route polylines with vehicle bearing rotation and smooth movement interpolation
- Shift earnings analytics, trip history records, automated receipts, and passenger-driver in-app communication
- Multi-channel payment handling including digital wallets, card authorization, and cash on arrival
Technical Challenges Overcome
- Eliminating race conditions and duplicate acceptances across concurrent driver broadcasts in high-density regions
- Maintaining accurate vehicle heading, route bearings, and coordinate interpolation without battery drain
- Gracefully handling ride cancellations, network handovers (Wi-Fi to Cellular), and background app resumption without state loss
Production Results & Impact
- Merged dual-mode mobile application delivering unified user and driver workflows from a single maintainable Flutter codebase.
- Sub-second location telemetry updates rendered at 60 FPS without UI jank or dropped frames.
- Comprehensive video demonstrations publicly accessible showcasing both driver and passenger workflows.
